Vampires and werewolves have enjoyed a surge in popularity lately. While stories of these supernatural beings have existed for quite some time, their presence in fiction has increased lately, in large part due to the popularity of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series. This series of four books features an ordinary teenage girl named Bella who falls in love with a virtuous vampire named Edward and is best friends with a hot-blooded werewolf named Jacob. The hugely popular Harry Potter series also mentioned vampires and featured a werewolf as one of the major side characters, portraying him in a sympathetic light.
The recent trend toward making these figures more sympathetic means that there are more narrative possibilities for them. One recent show that deals a lot with vampires is True Blood, where several of the vampires are likable characters, not to mention unusually physically attractive. This TV series was based on a popular book series. Meanwhile, series that involve werewolves include Grimm and Once Upon a Time, both of which use traditional fairy tales as jumping-off points for new understandings of werewolves. Through this positive portrayal of beings once perceived as monsters, we can find home for more understanding among ordinary humans.
