Overseas moviegoers wrote a sequel of their own this weekend at the box office: “New Moon” was No. 1, “2012” was second and “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” came in third, a straight repeat of last week’s top three.

“The Twilight” sequel took in another $40.7 million, bringing it to a total international tally of $314.5 million. It was the Summit Entertainment film’s third straight week at the top in foreign markets, pushing it over $570 million worldwide.

While the teen vampire flick has dropped off considerably in the U.S. — it came in second place domestically with $15.7 million over the weekend — it continues to play strong in the U.K., where it’s taken in $39.2 million so far.

“2012” continued its long, successful run at the foreign box office, with an additional $35 million in 75 markets this weekend. The Sony film also has crossed the half-a-billion mark, with $517.5 million worldwide to date.

“Disney’s A Christmas Carol” opened in Italy as No. 1 with $4 million, and totaled $16.9 million in foreign markets. Thus far, the Robert Zemeckis adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic has taken in $233.2 million thus far worldwide.
