Rob Wants To Do RomCom But Who With??

Robert Pattinson is drawing comparisons to Hugh Grant

Robert Pattinson continues to look beyond his break through role in the “Twilight” series and sees himself one day stepping into the shoes of Hugh Grant, the English actor who is famous for his roles in romantic comedies.

Hugh and Rob certainly have personality traits in common, such as a dry, self-deprecating English wit that worked well for Grant in a series of movies opposite Hollywood’s top leading ladies.

Grant, who is 50 and just over twice the 23-year-old actor’s age, has earned more than $2.4 billion from 25 theatrical releases worldwide over the course of his career.

His breakthrough role came in 1994 in Richard Curtis‘ “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” an off-beat romantic comedy. Unlike, Rob, however, Grant was, 32, almost 10 years older when he finally gain to international acclaim in the film.

He said he was on the brink of giving up the acting profession when he was handed the scrip for Four Weddings.

“If you read as many bad scripts as I did, you’d know how grateful you are when you come across one where the guy actually is funny,” he later recalled in an interview.

Grant’s thoughts about the film were spot on. It became the highest-grossing British film at that time, with a worldwide box office in excess of $244 million.

Perhaps not so surprisingly, Rob says he’s facing the same problem. He tells Britain’s GMTV in an upcoming interview that he’s yet to come across a romantic-comedy script he likes.

“I’d love to, but they are always just so rubbish — I mean like, I’d absolutely love to do it, but I’ve literally never read a good rom-com script,” Rob said.

At the same time, Rob is wary about being typecast as Hugh was for so long. “I think it’s such a typical career choice for me, as well, to be honest.

“If you do a big franchise thing — especially for English guys — you try and do a Hugh Grant part or something. Which I don’t think would be the best idea for me… mainly because it’s quite difficult to be Hugh Grant!”

One big benefit of Hugh’s roles was the opportunity to act opposite some of Hollywood’s top talent.

He co-starred with Julia Roberts (Notting Hill), Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones Diary), Andie MacDowell (Four Weddings), Kate Winslet (Sense and Sensibility) and Sandra Bullock (Two Weeks Notice).

In 2002’s “About a Boy,” he starred with Rachel Weisz, and in his latest film 2009’s “Did You Hear About the Morgans, he stars opposite Sarah Jessica Parker.

Which raises an interesting question; If Rob pursues rom-com movies, who would be his leading comedic actress?

He’s really only appeared opposite two female leads so far, Kristen Stewart, of course, and Emilie de Ravin. But both films are dramas.

Some obvious possibilities are Bullock and the queen of rom-com Jennifer Aniston. But both are substantially older than Rob.

So who could fill that role among his generation of actresses?

Ellen Page, 23, would seem like a natural; also Drew Barrymore, 35, although she skews slightly older.

How about 21-year-old Hayden Panettiere? She had the lead in 2009’s near universally panned rom-com “I Love You, Beth Cooper.”

And, there is a slew of Disney talent: Vanessa Hudgens, Demi Lovato, Selina Gomez and Miley Cyrus. Somehow they don’t seem to match up.

Ah… now here’s a possible match: Kate Hudson, who will be 31 next month.
