BD Chapter 6. Distractions

You can check out the Twilight Lexicon summary here. I’mjust going to jump right into this one and discuss…
Key Plot Points from The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide

  • Edward keeps Bella busy with snorkeling, hiking, swimming,exploring, and sunsets;
         Bellatries to seduce Edward with lingerie, bribes and compromises
  • Bella has nightmares about the Volturi and a vampire child,and wakes up crying
         Bellawants Edward so much she pleads with him, kisses him; they make love; Edwardand Bella are both happy in the morning; Bella gets woozy; the Braziliancleaning people come; the native woman suspects what Edward is and she isfrightened for Bella

I cannot agree with all the plot points here. First of all,Bella wasn’t dreaming of a vampire child this time.“He wasn’t the same boy as that first dream…This boy I’ddreamed of four times in the last week was definitely human; his cheeks wereflushed and his wide eyes were a soft green.”She was still worried about the Volturi coming for him, butnot because he was a vampire or an immortal child.

Secondly, she wasn’t dreaming about the little boy when shewoke up crying. She wasn’t having a nightmare. She was having a good dream. Shewas dreaming that she and Edward were together and she cried because she wokeup and realized that the dream wasn’t real. In her dream, she had the thingsthat Edward had been denying her.

Thirdly, there is no mention of the headboard or Bella’sdecision to remain human for a little while longer and go to Dartmouth. I’lladmit, the headboard isn’t a really a plot point, but come on, right? I alsothink it’s important to note that she really had everything that she wanted.She was with Edward now and going to be with him forever. Spending a little moretime human didn’t matter as much now that she knew she had eternity spread outin front of her.“Now that I’d discovered exactly how goo being human couldbe, it was tempting to let my plans drift. Eighteen or nineteen, nineteen ortwenty…Did it really matter? I wouldn’t change so much in a year.  And being human with Edward…The choice gottrickier every day.”I don’t think I ever really paid attention to the fact thatEdward talked about theLibishomenbefore, a blood-drinking demon who preys exclusively on beautiful women. I knewthat the woman had suspicions about what he was and worried about Bella, but I’dforgotten about this particular legend. Plays in well later on in the book, no?

So we end this chapter with everyone getting what they want.Edward is no longer afraid to be intimate with Bella. He’s convinced that hecan do so without hurting her now. Bella has decided to remain human for alittle longer. This should be setting us up for the happily ever after, right?

Am I the only one thinking that Isle Esme sounds likeabsolute paradise even without Edward there?

Just one more chapter of Bella’s book left and then we’re onto Jacob.
