I finally got to see New Moon yesterday evening, I know it was still the first day, but I was dying to get to the theater and see it, especially after hearing all the glowing reports all day. Thank you thank you to everyone for being very good about not giving away too many details. This review will be spoiler free also. I'm only intending this to be an overview of the movie I enjoyed. I'll write a more detailed review after the weekend.
First off, it was beautiful. The colors, the sets, even the individual shots, everything was gorgeous. It felt very real to me, I could place myself right there with the characters. Most of you know I live only a few hours from Forks, and the colors really are that rich.
Let your minds rest about Taylor being able to play our leading man. He was amazing. Kristen Stewart drew me right into Bella's emotional state, I still feel like I'm reeling from the emotional roller coaster Bella experiences in the story. Rob had Edward's emotional journey so wrapped up. The pain, the confliction, even the relief.
It wasn't just the Big Three, either. Michael Sheen blew me away as Aro. Dakota Fanning is as scary as Jane as I knew she'd be. Daniel Cudmore, whoa...so intimidating as Felix. Chaske Spencer as Sam, did fantastic with conveying the leadership and wisdom, and I can't wait to see him again as the movies progress. Billy Burke, of course, steals every scene. Bella's human friends, played by Michael Welch, Anna Kendrick and Christian Serratos were perfect.
The soundtrack fits perfectly. "Possibility" by Lykke Li has been my favorite since I first listened, and I knew it would make me cry wherever it was placed. My guess proved wrong, and the actual placement broke me, those tissues in my New Moon Preparedness Kit came in handy about then.
In order to balance my fangirly self, I will admit there was one scene I felt was just...silly. If you've seen the movie already, you know which one. If not, you'll recognize it right away. More on that later.
I want to say one thing that was extremely important to me. We all know how wonderfully decorative our cast is. We've all swooned together and discussed the need for fresh articles of clothing when we watch this movie. And it's true, they all live up to their wonderfully gorgeous potential. However, and this is a big however, the emotional journey is so amazing, it really overtook the eye-candy for me. I admired them at the moment that were intended for you to take in physical appearance. But the focus was on the emotional journey, not 'how hot are Rob and Taylor.'
I'll be seeing New Moon again today at some point, possibly tomorrow as well. I can't wait to see what I notice differently the second time.
Go and enjoy!
